Lift technology

Lifts and escalators transport billions of people every day with a particularly high degree of reliability. It is not without reason that lifts are considered the safest means of transport in the world. In some cases, lifts are several hundred metres long and can travel at speeds of up to 20 metres per second. They are often used to transport people in office or residential buildings. However, they are also found as freight lifts in hotels.

Ultimately, the various types of lifts and escalators all require powerful and safe drive technology. KEB has been an established partner for lifts and escalators on the US market since 1988 and was one of the first suppliers of converters for lifts. KEB’s intelligent solutions for modern lift systems focus on energy efficiency, ride comfort and seamless integration into the system. A comprehensive portfolio that can be adapted to customer requirements makes this possible.

  • Drive controllers with special lift features
  • Regenerative systems, EMC filters and more
  • Integrated functional safety
  • Precise control of synchronous and asynchronous motors
  • Flexible integration, long-lasting quality and standard compliance

From passenger lifts to goods lifts

The lift sector has different requirements than typical industrial applications. Maximum precision in positioning and holding accuracy is required to ensure safe and comfortable transport. At the same time, lifts must complete short travel cycles with a high repetition frequency to ensure smooth operation even when heavily used. Each lift system has individual requirements in terms of drive technology and system integration – depending on the lifting height, cabin size, frequency of use and structural conditions. The following practical examples show how KEB Automation’s modular drive technology can be integrated into a wide variety of applications.

Lift system solutions from KEB Automation

Goods lifts

As part of complex logistics processes, goods lifts must be particularly reliable. A robust design and high load capacity are just as important as high performance in drive technology. That is why KEB Automation offers the COMBIVERT F6, a drive controller for power ratings up to 450 kW, and the COMBIVERT R6, a flexible and sustainable energy recovery solution. The simple connection to common industrial fieldbus systems such as EtherCAT, PROFINET or CANopen is just as advantageous as the robustness of the components and the high input voltage.

Passenger lifts

The range of passenger lifts extends from space-saving models to luxurious panoramic lifts. They all require smart drive solutions that combine energy efficiency, safety and ride comfort. KEB implements precise movements using the COMBIVERT F6 drive controller with lift features and offers a particularly energy-efficient operation option with the COMBIVERT R6. Switching frequencies of up to 16 kHz ensure a quiet ride. Synthetic pre-torque builds up a defined torque before the brake is released – for smooth starts and maximum ride comfort. Evacuation functions, among other things, ensure that high safety standards are met.

Service lifts

Most service lift cabins are designed for light goods and are often installed in very confined spaces. This makes COMBIVERT S6 servo drives the ideal choice, as they offer a compact, space-saving solution for smaller conveyor capacities and can supply a 24 V motor brake in the converter. In addition, the COMBIVERT G6 is a compact open-loop converter with a built-in filter and display.

Machine room-less lifts

As with other types of lifts, energy efficiency and safety are also important for machine room-less lifts. Drive technology from KEB meets these requirements and, thanks to its compact dimensions, is ideal for installation in the shaft or door frame. Drive controller models with integrated EMC filters and pluggable terminalswith touch protection, as well as various cooling solutions and optional 3C3 protective coating for circuit boards round off the range.

Technologie

The intuitive operation of COMBIVERT Drives can optionally be carried out using a lift operator (also suitable for remote installation), which is equipped with USB and Ethernet interfaces and provides lift terminology in seven languages. Users can choose between metric and imperial units and benefit from detailed diagnostics and data logging. A 5-level parameter-protected access level and the availability of a user-defined parameter library are further advantages of the operator.

Functional safety

Electrical machines and systems are subject to increasingly stringent safety requirements. Simplify your safety concept with the KEB drive controller’s integrated safety functions. Speeds, positions and various other functions are monitored directly in the drive electronics. The KEB safety control integrates the requirements of safety technology into the functional control environment. Safe communication with the control level serves as a widely used and established FSoE (Safety over EtherCat) solution – alternatively, communication via ProfiSafe is also available. In addition to, or instead of, a safe field bus system, individual safety functions can also easily be switched on and off via digital inputs. With the certification of sensorless safety functions, in some cases speed-related functions can also be implemented without a sensor system.

Energy recovery

Rather than burning energy, why not harness it? With energy supply and recovery systems from our product range, machine and plant manufacturers are already optimising new machines during the design phase or creating a second phase of use for existing systems in retrofit manufacturing.

Energy recovery technology

In an increasingly electrified and connected building environment, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is essential for the smooth operation of all systems. Frequency inverters, as power electronic components, can cause significant interference if they are not adequately suppressed – from data errors in control lines to failures in neighbouring systems. Lift systems are subject to standards such as EN 12015 (interference emission) and EN 12016 (interference immunity). These standards specify limit values to ensure that the lift itself operates without interference and does not cause interference in the electrical environment.
