Peak Power Drives: The solution for high load peaks
Enhanced overload capacity for intralogistics and more
Building on the proven COMBIVERT F6 drive controllers, KEB Automation has introduced the “Peak Power Drives”. This provides a drive solution optimised for applications with high load peaks and increased starting torque. Peak Power Drives demonstrate their strengths in intralogistics, crane applications and other applications with demanding load and acceleration characteristics.

With their integrated safety functions, high scalability and wide range of options for motors, encoders and communication, the COMBIVERT F6 Drives are true all-rounders. It is therefore no surprise that these drives are found in almost all common sectors of plant and mechanical engineering. In some areas, however, powerful and robust drives are required that are specifically designed for high starting torques or dynamic loads. To address this, KEB has introduced the Peak Power Drives, thereby filling a gap in its product range.
“To ensure stable and precise control during start-up and at breakaway torque, the Peak Power Drives feature improved current reserves. Significantly increased current limits and trip currents, improved overload capacity and optimised control algorithms ensure the required performance – even and especially during dynamic load changes,” says Rüdiger Sabon, Sales Engineer at KEB. Specifically, the overload capacity is up to 200 per cent / 60 s, giving the drive the necessary robustness for use in challenging applications. A particular advantage: the drives feature increased power density – more power in the same size as the standard F6 drives. This not only saves valuable space in the control cabinet but also reduces material and installation costs. Integration into existing systems is also made easier.
Optimised for these applications
Like the COMBIVERT F6 standard drive controllers, the Peak Power drives offer particularly flexible application options thanks to scalable sizes and power ranges. Intralogistics, crane and high-duty applications – such as extruders, rolling mills or presses – benefit in particular from the specific features of the drives. In many intralogistics processes, fast, highly dynamic movements and frequent start-stop cycles are commonplace. “Conveyor belts, stacker cranes or shuttles must accelerate and decelerate in the shortest possible time whilst transporting loads of varying weights. For example, when starting fully loaded systems, the overload capacity of the Peak Power Drives is essential,” says Sabon. The precise and smooth movements achievable with the drive ensure gentle goods handling.
The balance between high starting torque and smooth starting must often be found in crane applications. The new drive features ensure that precise positioning and reliable movement – even with very heavy loads – are not mutually contradictory. In dynamic movements, such as fast lifting or travel cycles, the high current limits prevent power drops. Even high-duty applications, where drives are often subjected to high thermal and mechanical stress on a continuous basis, benefit from Peak Power Drives. This is because they combine thermal reserves with a robust design and can withstand recurring load peaks without shutting down. The result: applications operate reliably, downtime is reduced – and the operation of the application becomes particularly cost-effective.
