COMBIVIS connect is a software platform for remote support. It enables remote access to systems and machines installed around the world, with the major advantage of being able to access all data and programs. You can work from home as if you were standing at the machine on site – so travel and travel expenses are eliminated! COMBIVIS connect – Specifications of components


The Control Center is the “client” software and is installed on the service computer. It enables management of domain resources, and registers the devices in the domain in question. It enables connection to a specific device, instantiates VPNs, desktop connection, manages virtual serial ports and enables file sharing with the remote explorer, etc.


COMBIVIS connect Runtime is a service program enabling remote access to the devices. The service runs in the background and can be controlled by the COMBIVIS connect Runtime user interface or the HMI application using commands in the command line. It acts as a "client" to the server infrastructure. COMBIVIS connect Runtime is available for embedded systems and “PC-based” systems and also for classic HMI devices.


The server infrastructure supports access to the services and ensures a secure connection between the systems. The infrastructure enables authentication of the Control Center user, authentication of the hardware systems on which COMBIVIS connect Runtime is installed, retrieval of all runtime systems allocated to a specific domain, access to remote devices from the Control Center client side, and use of access rights assigned to the groups and individual users. The infrastructure is distributed worldwide and offers redundancy and “fault tolerance” features.


The domain represents the company account which is hosted by the server infrastructure. From a logic point of view, this structure contains a group of devices, users, groups, firewall rules and rules concerning how permissions are to be used. The domain groups together all remote devices and organises them into tree-like folders. The management of access rights for users is also possible, with no limits on the number of users and devices that can be contained in one domain.

COMBIVIS connect – Features

Securely proteced VPN

COMBIVIS connect Runtime contains a VPN server which accepts remote connections from Control Center clients. COMBIVIS connect VPN operates at level 2 (Data Link) and does not require any additional routing rules. Remote devices in the field do not have to change their gateway in order to be accessed remotely.

The VPN establishes a virtual data connection between the virtual network adapter installed on the control station computer and one or more network interfaces which are present on the runtime device and have been previously configured so that they are accessible via VPN.


Certified security

With COMBIVIS connect, data protection and data security come first. To underline this, the COMBIVIS connect Access Servers, the C6 Routers, the Control Center, as well as all Runtimes as of version 8 have been certified according to the international standard IEC 62443- for Industrial Communication Networks and IT Security for Networks and Systems. This allows among other things the configuration of a secure password assignment.

Compatibility with existing firewalls

COMBIVIS connect Control Center and COMBIVIS connect Runtime connections are configured as outgoing connections which are acknowledged as secure and therefore acceptable according to firewall guidelines


The integrated firewall enables simple definition of guidelines for VPN traffic in order to increase security and reduce data traffic between the runtime environment and the Control Center. The configuration is similar to that of commercial firewalls; the first step involves defining the guidelines, while the last step involves applying them. COMBIVIS connect features an extensive pre-defined guideline library which is available and maintained at server level. It can be applied within the domain.



Multi Client

COMBIVIS connect Runtime allows simultaneous access to a remote system with several connections.

Always Up-to-date

The new update function makes it possible to easily update the runtime of the devices by remote maintenance. This saves a time-consuming and expen-sive service call. Existing device groups can benefit directly from updated security features.
The system administrator has full control over all software updates. Device, update type and time can be planned individually. Thus, already at work time relevant update can be pre-activated. The update itself can be scheduled for instance during a production break at the weekend.

Audit of access activities

COMBIVIS connect records and saves all remote access activities at the respective domain.
Network administrators have a full overview of who has worked for how long on a project. The resulting record of time spent can be used for example for later invoicing of an after-sales service. 
The accurate combination of orders performed, specifying operator, remote PC and connection time, gives a transparent proof of activity for the end customer.

Management of access rights

With COMBIVIS connect, an unlimited number of users, user groups and devices can be defined each with different access rules. Authorisations can be configured flexibly from folder level to the individual device.

Secure VPN connection

COMBIVIS connect automatically installs a VPN adapter on the Control Center PC. The virtual Ethernet adapter works as a VPN client and receives an IP address from the existing VPN network from the remote device (VPN server). There is a direct end-to-end connection between the communi-cation partners.


Virtual serial connection

COMBIVIS connect automatically installs a virtual serial adapter on the Control Center PC. The virtual serial port of the Control Center PC can be mapped to a physically present port of the remote device if COMBIVIS  connect Runtime is installed. The serial connection mode provides the  opportunity of serial communication via RS232, RS422, RS485 or MPI.

Chat between local and remote PC

To allow the exchange of important information quickly in a project, KEB has provided a chat function in the remote maintenance solution. This allows direct communication without separate telephone conferences, because the technician at the CONTROL Center is directly connected via the remote maintenance network to the remote engineer on site in on-line chat.

Remote Desktop Function

The Control Center software offers a remote function with which desktops of remote devices can be operated remotely, without additional services or support programs.

Device management

C6 IPCs and C6 HMIs with COMBIVIS connect Runtime can be included in a domain using their ID and a password, and registered with their serial number. This excludes registration under further domains, which safely prevents access outside the domain. The unique access rules extend to device level.

File exchange with remote devices

Thanks to the Remote Explorer Control Center function, a complete tool is available for downloading and uploading of files. This brings the benefit that access to the directories of the VPN partner need no longer be granted separately. Additional applications such as FTP servers are also no longer required.

  • Update COMBIVIS HMI Runtime version to 5.1.1183.128 in COMBIVIS connect Router.
  • General improvements of the user interface of the COMBIVIS connect Tools. COMBIVIS connect Tools allow you to transfer files and folders over the VPN channel, open an advance remote desktop connection and list the running processes. The Runtime Win32 has a new user interface, similar to the COMBIVIS connect Tools, to make the setup operation as easy and straightforward as possible.


  • When you were connecting with the remote desk in some cases only a white screen appeared.
  • You cannot open a VPN channel or display the remote desktop while in demo period.

  • Fixed a visualization issue of the logs when running two file transfers simultaneously in Control Center.

  • Corrected the warning message that listed only the first file to be deleted from the remote device even when more than one was selected.

  • Added geolocation support to the domain view. The devices are automatically positioned using their public IP or they can be manually positioned using a custom address.
