Engineering as a complete discipline

KEB Automation supports the General Engineering degree programme at TH OWL

One degree programme, many facets – this year, the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences (TH OWL) in Lemgo is offering the bilingual “General Engineering” study programme for the first time. The name says it all, as the engineering sciences are viewed holistically over the course of the eight semesters. The programme also focuses on language learning, thus creating important prerequisites for future specialists in the region. As a partner of TH OWL, KEB offers students the opportunity to gain valuable practical insights.

“The labour market is constantly changing and is always placing new demands on the skilled workers of tomorrow. It is therefore important for us to keep up with the times and adapt our extensive training programme accordingly,” says Wolfgang Wiele, CTO at KEB Automation. The latest offering from TH OWL at the Innovation Campus in Lemgo will include the General Engineering course from the winter semester 2024. KEB is a reliable partner to the university and can provide internships integrated into the degree programme or support research projects.

The General Engineering Bachelor's degree programme is bilingual (the first three semesters are taught in English) and lasts a total of eight semesters. The TH OWL takes a holistic approach to engineering. This means that in addition to teaching the German language, knowledge is imparted in all STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). The various facets of engineering are scrutinised in teams on the basis of specific projects. After the first three semesters, students then choose a specialisation from a total of ten different engineering fields. These include computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, digital production technology, mechatronics and many more. The fourth semester is all about putting what you have learnt into practice. Internships in various companies in the region, including KEB, are planned for this purpose - and international students' German language skills are further improved in this way.

Theory and practice combined

“I myself studied at the TH OWL and am therefore delighted about the new General Engineering degree programme, which places particular emphasis on the STEM subjects. The bilingual programme gives our region more international expertise and we at KEB are very happy to support this,” says Wiele. KEB Automation and TH OWL have been working together successfully for years to offer cooperative degree programmes. Students of electrical engineering, computer engineering and mechatronics combine theory and practice in this way and are thus optimally trained for their subsequent entry into professional life. The close link between theory and practice is focussed on departmental visits and projects in the company. This opens up a wide range of development opportunities during the degree programme. The range of courses on offer is adapted to training requirements every year, so that from 2025, for example, degree programmes such as Data Science or Innovative Production Systems will be available to choose from.
