High-speed drives with air cooling launched

More Performance. Less hassle. Maximum flexibility.

KEB Automation is now expanding its drive portfolio for turbo blowers, compressors and other high-speed applications: in addition to liquid-cooled high-speed drives, an air-cooled version will also be available from now on. This solves application problems where cooling water cannot be used. Another new feature is the option of parallel connection, which allows power outputs in the megawatt range to be reliably achieved.

In applications where motors run at extremely high speeds, efficient cooling of the drive controller is essential. High switching frequencies and frequent clocking of the output stages generate heat that must be reliably dissipated. With the introduction of an air-cooled version of the COMBIVERT F6 high-speed drives, there is now another option for driving turbo blowers, compressors, machining spindles and similar equipment. "Our customers need to be able to respond flexibly to the specific conditions of the application. Therefore, the air-cooled COMBIVERT F6 High-Speed Drives are an efficient option when liquid cooling cannot be implemented or no cooling water is available. This can be the case with steam compressors, for example, when control cabinets are located far away from the machine," says Fabian Fischer, Team Leader Application Sales at KEB Automation.

The air-cooled drives deliver outputs of up to 355 kW, output frequencies of up to 2,000 Hz and a maximum switching frequency of up to 16 kHz. Like the liquid-cooled version, the drives are designed for ambient temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius. The optional 3C3 coating (IEC/EN 60721-3-3 Class 3C3) on the circuit board ensures robustness in harsh environmental conditions. The protective coating helps to prevent defects and unwanted downtime and extends the service life of the drive controller. Another advantage of the air-cooled drives is that the heat sinks can optionally be routed through the control cabinet to the outside, allowing the waste heat to be dissipated outside the cabinet. This eliminates the need for complex cooling of the cabinet.

Proven combination with sinusoidal filters

The liquid- and air-cooled high-speed drives are equally optimised for operation in combination with KEB's COMBILINE Z2 sinusoidal filters. The output filters consist of a motor choke and a capacitor package and can be flexibly adapted to different applications thanks to their modular design.

For motors that are less sensitive, the motor choke is available separately. Machine and plant manufacturers also have a high degree of freedom when installing the filters in the control cabinet. The high-speed filters of the Z2 series have a high efficiency of more than 99.9 per cent and significantly reduce harmonic losses in the motor. Last but not least, the EMC behaviour of the entire drive is improved by the filters, and motor cable lengths of up to 100 metres can be achieved without voltage peaks that are dangerous for the motor.
